challenge
Design the user-interface for the apps that form a new nationwide IT system, which facilitates and standardises the centralised ordering and processing of clinical genetic tests. Replace offline, local processes currently used for the over 3,000 genetic tests ordered weekly across NHS England. The interface must help users to find the right test, supply the relevant patient information, interrogate and compare complex genetic data to improve the diagnosis of rare diseases.

outcomes
A complex yet easy-to-use and flexible, secure operating platform which facilitates and standardises the centralised ordering and processing of clinical genetic tests, ready for a pilot rollout Q1 2019. Increasing efficiency, broadening access to testing, and opening up more genetic data to specialists ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes.
The main learnings were pivoting to a phased rollout of the apps due to the aggressive timelines of the project. Many labs were not ready to be fully digitised immediately without heavily impacting their workload, so we pivoted to providing printable data collection forms for test requests for some labs to ease the transition.
